Captivating Collage

Overview:

In Captivating Collage, artists will learn the basics of collage work. This class is designed for beginners who have minimal materials at home. Artists may have to buy some materials for their projects, but most of the materials— paper and mark-makers, for example— will be things an artist could find around the home.

Because of the materials involved, each collage will look completely different from each other, which is one of the fun things about this style of art. By the end of this class, an artist will have a brand new image to proudly display in their home that has been made with things that might otherwise be thrown away.

Captivating Collage is meant to be done mostly with objects around the home, and needs minimal materials to be purchased from the store. An artist doesn’t need fancy tools to create a beautiful piece, and will be able to make beautiful works of art with objects they already own!

Supplies:

  • A glue stick

  • A pair of scissors

  • Thick paper to make your collage on

  • Acrylic paint

  • Palette paper to put paint on while working on the collage

Most materials for your collage can be found around the home. Think about what sort of marks you can make with things you might otherwise throw away! Here are some suggestions:

  • Old newspapers or magazines

  • Wrapping paper

  • Plastic utensils

  • Cut up sponges

  • Empty rolls of tape

  • Toothpicks

  • Plastic cups

  • Spare buttons

  • Knick-knacks from your “junk drawer”

You could also make your own tools. For instance, you could cut interesting shapes out of the end of a notecard and use it like a paintbrush. You could also use craft foam to cut out your unique one-of-a-kind stamp shapes for use in your collage.

The most important part is to have fun. Enjoy exploring the wonder process that is collage!
