WELCOME TO PAINT A MIRACLE’S:

ENCAUSTIC STUDIO

* New Classes Available!

We are thrilled to announce our new Encaustic Studio!

This unique studio is one of only a few in Michigan that are open to the public. By opening the studio to the public, we are able to expand art opportunities to our low income artists living with disabilities. Made possible by a grant from the Abrams Foundation, this encaustic studio was created with the purpose of providing a relaxing art experience to anyone and everyone who could use some time out for themselves. Encaustic painting is a unique form of art which engages all the senses, and at the same time, provides a soothing sense of peace.

What is encaustic painting anyway?

Encaustic painting is an ancient art form dating back to the Egyptians in about 100 AD. Today, encaustic art is experiencing a resurgence due to interest in mediums using natural materials. The word encaustic is derived from the Greek word “enkaiein” meaning “to burn in” which refers to the fusing necessary between layers of paint. Diego Rivera and Jasper Johns are more contemporary artists known to have worked in encaustics. The depth and luminous translucency of encaustic painting makes it uniquely appealing.

Encaustic paint is composed of beeswax, damar resin from trees (for hardness) and pigment. This wax mixture is kept fluid by heating it on a palate or griddle and smells wonderful. Because molten wax often has a mind of its own, much encaustic art is abstract in nature though there are numerous techniques for adding realism to artwork.

Encaustic paints are best applied to absorbent, rigid and heat resistant surfaces such as wood panel although a few alternative surfaces are growing in popularity like cardboard or plaster. Each layer of paint is fused to the previous layer with a heat gun or torch to ensure adhesion. The wax cools immediately so no drying time is required. Numerous techniques and methods include layering, incising and embedding objects or photos and pouring. Carving into the warm wax to reveal previous layers is especially rewarding. Collage and stenciling also adapt nicely with encaustic. Once cooled, encaustic art can be polished to a glasslike surface.

The following classes are for anyone looking to set aside time to be creative and try something new. Painting with encaustic wax engages all of your senses. The smell of melted beeswax surrounds you as you paint. Beautiful translucent layers and the act of carving into smooth warm wax allows for a calming and restorative art experience.

Our instructors will demonstrate “best practice” techniques in a SAFE & ENCOURAGING ENVIRONMENT. We are committed to a joyful art experience!

NO PREVIOUS ART OR ENCAUSTIC EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!!
