According to the United States Census Bureau, there are almost 4 million people with disabilities in southeast Michigan. For many, boredom, frustration and isolation are frequent challenges. Caregivers and therapists search for meaningful community experiences, but too often there is a lack of imagination in developing programs for people with disabilities. Fortunately, there has been a growing awareness throughout the country that people with disabilities can live more meaningful and independent lives if they are provided with creative and community-oriented experiences.
An art studio provides a place where both creativity and community can
flourish. Within this studio setting artists can share their
challenges, hopes, joys and triumphs. Creating art can help people with
disabilities to heal, enhance their self-image, improve their
concentration and communication skills, and strengthen their ability to
confidently make decisions for themselves.
